Robert Hayman

Employee Jack Tucker in front of the premises of Robert Hayman at 39 Fore Street. House furnisher, carpets & linoleums. Employees of Mr C.J.Blake discovered an old well while excavating at the rear of 39 Fore Street (May 1962) for an extension to Mr F.J.Rodgers furniture showroom. The well was built in the old bottleshaped style similar to the much larger one found at Seymour Lodge, Bridgetown, several years ago. The wells were cunningly built of stone, large at the bottom and narrow at the top. Even todays skilled masons question how the work was done The men also uncovered some ancient oak beams, which will be preserved. One of the beams was probably the keel of a ship.
