Harriet Clear (c.1832-1892)

Harriet Clear (born Hodge), wife of John Baker Clear, was born about 1832, either at Dartington or South Brent. They married in 1865 at Dartington. In the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, she is recorded at Hope Cottage, Longcause, Dartington, with her husband, her two sons and a servant, which is probably where the photograph was taken. She took her own life at the farm on the morning of 29 November 1892. The next day, the Western Times reported: 'Deceased it is said had been in rather low spirits for some time'. Her husband died in 1897.
