High Street and Butterwalk. Lion Brewery, right. Star Tea supplies under Butterwalk, left. Around 1897, Sidney Phillips and Williams Walters were partners at the Lion Brewery, Totnes. Walters was previously the manager at the Royal Brewery in Windsor and before that was a partner in the Original Brewery in Ashford. Sidney Phillips, of Newport (a brewery family), retired from the Totnes concern in July 1900. The partnership was dissolved (mentioned 1901) and Sidney Phillips died 28.12.1903. In 1921 Walter & Phillips were still listed at the Lion Brewery (maybe the family retained interest). The Lion Brewery stopped trading in 1926. At its peak, owned 26 pubs.
