Ralph Fernley Arscott (1920–1941), 1941

On HMS Galatea on 10 November 1941, Stoker 1st Class. Ralph Fernley Arscott was born in Totnes on 26 June 1920 and died on 14 December 1941, age 21; Stoker 1st Class on HMS Galatea. The ship was attacked by U-557 during World War II. The Commander, 22 officers and 447 ratings were lost; 144 survivors were picked up in the Mediterranean, off Alexandria. He is remembered on Buckfastleigh War Memorial. By 1921, the family was living at Week, Dartington, and Dartington church contains a plaque. He was the son of William and Gladys May Arscott (born Stansbury), of Totnes, and had two sisters, Joan and Viola, and a brother Victor (shown in images AA 0015 and AA0024).
