Orange Race

Bill Bennett, Mayor, with one of the winners of the Orange Race on Elizabethan Day. Cllr Bill Bennett, made MBE for his services to this town 1989. He was elected onto the old Totnes Borough Council in 1955 and served as councillor and alderman for more than 30 years. Cllr Bennett became a member of the South Hams District Council with the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and in 1989 was still Totnes's representative on the District Council. The orange race has been held each August since 1978
