Leechwell 1951

CROWN COPYRIGHT. The Leechwells consists of three stone baths or sinks, fed by three jets of water coming out of holes in an ajacent wall. Wardens of the Lychewylle were appointed in the Middle Ages. The troughs were known locally as The Snake, The Toad and The Long Crippler (grass snake). Mr E.Windeatt wrote in 1894 "One spring was considered eficacious to relieve diseased eyes and is still used, the centre trough helped with the bits of a grass snake and the other trough helped to ease skin disease. Leechwell, Grade ll listed Ancient spring in cobbled recess below street level, three springs discharge into three shallow stone troughs. Ref CD 1:AO F 5 1
