Bill Bennett 1927 - 2004. A Mayoral portrait during Jubilee year 1977 in the Guildhall. Bill Bennett MBE, three times Mayor of Totnes and the towns first Honoured Citizen in 1978. Borough Mayor, May 1969-70. Second Mayorality year - Jubilee 1977. Third Mayorality year - May 1996 - May 1997. Cllr Bill Bennett, made MBE for his services to this town 1989. He was elected onto the old Totnes Borough Council in 1955 and served as councillor and alderman for more than 30 years. Cllr Bennett became a member of the South Hams District Council with the reorganisation of local government in 1974 and in 1989 was still Totnes's representative on the District Council.
