Fore Street & East Gate, 1890s

East Gate and Fore Street, 1890s. Mrs Sarah Kellow, refreshments & Boarding House, 60 Fore Street Frank Tozer, bootmaker, 66 Fore street. Charles Heal, grocer & tobacconist, 62 Fore street. From TT - April 1919. 60 Fore Street, which had been a restaurant for several years, was offered for sale by auction. Paignton Co-operative Society purchased it for £650. A tourist guide for Totnes, published by Mortimer Bros., Totnes, in c.1926 (?), advertises Kellow's Restaurant: 'The Oldest Established in the town. (Just below the East Gate). Excellent accommodation for Tourists. Large Rooms for Pic-Nic Parties. Good catering. Moderate charges'. This suggests that, despite the sale, it continued to operate as a restaurant later. Image JFB 0119, dated c. 1929, also shows Kellow's clearly. In September 2025, 60 Fore Street (with 58) formed part of the premises of Windeatts, the solicitors; the firm moved to new premises that month from its earlier location in the High Street.
