Beating the Bounds 1977
Bill Bennett revives the tradition, last done by him in 1969 of Beating the Bounds. 200 people took part in the tradition of Beating the Bounds of Totnes Parish first started in the seventeenth century. A walker was bumped on each of the stones that could be reached. Photo shows Bill Bennett accompanied by town crier Neville Jarrett walking under the East Gate. Neville Jarrett was town crier for 10 years before retiring in 1985 after learning of a growth in his vocal cords but could still be seen in Elizabethan dress in the town. Percy Moysey, SHDC. Neville Jarrett died at Mount Tryon Care Home, Torquay, 19.06.2014, age 91. He was a prominent Rotarian who used to race motorcycles. He became Mayor of Totnes in 1978 the same year he re-invented the orange race.
